Cytokeratins 8 and 18 are often co-expressed in glandular and transitional epithelial cells in liver and intestine.
Strong cytoplasmic and membraneous reactivity for CK8/18 is observed in simple epithelia, as in this example of colon.
Variable levels of cytoplasmic and membraneous reactivity for CK8/18 are present among hepatocytes, with greater degrees of staining in the periportal zones.
In contrast to the strong cytoplasmic reactivity present in the simple glandular epithelium, below, the stratified squamous epithelium of the esophagus shows weak to negative cytoplasmic reactivity for CK8/18, with the greatest degree of intensity in the basal region.
